1968 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 2 4.2 FHC

This Jaguar E-Type Series 2 Fixed Head Coupe is a restored example of the much-adored British classic, which presents very well and is in strong mechanical order. Under the bonnet is the 4.2-litre straight-six engine, which produces up to 265bhp and is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The odometer displays 41,844 miles, though this figure cannot be warranted.

First registered on 18 December 1968, this original right-hand drive E-Type was previously registered to the seller’s father, who cherished it during his long ownership and took it out on the open road for four or five classic car runs each year. During his ownership, a thorough mechanical and cosmetic restoration was undertaken – and completed in 2014 – before the car was passed on to his son around four years ago.

The bodywork of this Series 2 is in very good shape, and owes its fine condition to its prior renovation, which included replacement of the floors and sills by Jaguar restoration specialist M&C Wilkinson in April 2014.

Described by the seller as being in excellent condition, the Midnight Blue paintwork has a smooth and glossy appearance across the entire body, and while there is some surface rust near the door seals where paint has chipped off, this is a relatively minor issue, and does not detract from the car’s otherwise handsome appearance.

Further adding to this E-Type’s appeal is a blue vinyl Webasto sunroof. The window rubbers all look sound, but the seller notes that the door seals would probably benefit from replacement in due course. The engine bay, underside and suspension components, all present very well, and are a testament to its restoration and subsequent careful storage and maintenance.

This charming British sports car rides on a set of 15-inch wire wheels, which have been polished to a high shine and feature the correct two-eared Jaguar knock-off hubs.

Retrimmed in light grey leather with blue piping, the cabin’s upholstery provides an attractive contrast with the bodywork, and exhibits only minor signs of wear, including a small piece of trim behind the driver’s seat that is no longer fixed in place, plus some damage to the leather on the driver’s door card where it meets the mechanical window winder.

Elsewhere, the interior exhibits a charming light patina, and the light grey carpeting and matching lap belts suit the car well. While the paint has been scraped away on the shut panel of the passenger door, where it meets the door latch bracket, there are no signs of corrosion, and it would be straightforward to refinish the area.

Entertainment is provided via the relatively more modern Panasonic radio/cassette player – likely an early 1990s addition. The seller is not aware of any faults with the switchgear or electrical items.

During their four years of ownership, the seller has carried out general maintenance to keep this E-Type in good running order, including a service in 2020 when the engine oil and filter were replaced. Prior to this the car was serviced annually by a local garage.

While restoring the car’s bodywork in 2014, M&C Wilkinson also replaced a number of other items, including the brake fluid sender and heat shield, as well as rectifying issues with the headlamps, horn, windscreen washer, steering column and reversing light. The car’s 4.2-litre engine is believed to be original, and was rebuilt prior to the current ownership.

Exempt due to its age, the car’s last MOT test was conducted on 10 April 2018 at an indicated 41,016 miles. This resulted in a first-time pass, with advisories being issued for worn dust covers over the front rack rod end ball joints, and slight play in the offside front wheel bearing.

All four of this E-Types wire wheels are fitted with Michelin MXT 195/65 R15 tyres, which are in reasonable condition and have a good amount of tread remaining. The car is accompanied by numerous receipts for maintenance and restoration, plus a collection of photos documenting the work carried out.

This Jaguar E-Type Series 2 4.2 FHC is a smart example of the sought-after 1960s sports car, which benefits from a recent restoration commissioned by its enthusiastic previous owner, and is presented in a handsome colour combination. Though there are some minor cosmetic imperfections that the next owner could attend to if they wish, the car is still in great shape, and is reported to be in fine mechanical fettle – ready to be enjoyed on the road.
